Heartburn Causes And Symptoms Plus Natural Remedies To Relieve Heartburn
Causes and Symptoms of Heartburn
Heartburn refers to the burning, heat, warmth or pain in the chest just beneath the lower breastbone which typically worsens when lying down and bending over, and improves when sitting down or standing up. It is one of the most common complaints and is experienced by virtually everyone from time to time. Occasional heartburn is not a cause of concern but frequent, persisting or severe burning or pain sensation in the upper abdomen can be a symptom of a serious disease and requires medical attention.
Symptoms of heartburn may include a burning feeling in the throat, a sour taste in the mouth, coughing, difficulty swallowing and wheezing which indicate more severe heartburn. It is also important to keep in mind that symptoms of heartburn and symptoms of heart attack may feel very similar. Seek immediate medical help if having severe chest pain, especially if it is accompanied by difficulty breathing, or pain in your arm or jaw. You are also highly recommended to call your doctor if having symptoms of heartburn more than twice per week, if experiencing difficulty swallowing or if symptoms of heartburn persist despite home treatment.
Heartburn is caused by back up or reflux of the stomach acid into the esophagus – the tube that connects the throat and the stomach. When you swallow, the lower esophageal sphincter (a muscle at the bottom of the esophagus) relaxes in order to allow the food and liquids to pass into the stomach. Normally, the esophageal sphincter closes after the food and liquids pass through but if weakened or abnormally relaxed the esophageal sphincter can allow the the stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus which in turn causes the symptoms of heartburn. The reflux of the stomach acid is most common after eating, especially if lying down or bending over immediately after having a meal.
Several factors can cause the reflux of the stomach acid into the esophagus. The most common causes include pressure on the stomach due to obesity, pregnancy, tight-fitting clothing, intense exercise, straining during bowel movements, and frequent bending over. Other common causes of heartburn are stress, certain medications, certain foods and drinks, and smoking cigarettes. Severe heartburn can indicate more serious health problems such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), infection and even some types of cancer.
Treatment That’s Proven To Work
Mild to moderate heartburn that is not caused by an underlying medical condition can be successfully treated with all natural remedies. Over-the-counter medications do not treat heartburn but only relieve its symptoms. For that reason, you are highly recommended to lose excess pounds if being overweight or maintain a healthy body weight, avoid foods and drinks that seem to trigger heartburn symptoms, quit smoking if you smoke, eat five to six smaller meals instead of three large ones, avoid lying down immediately after having a meal and avoid wearing tight-fitting clothing. Elevate your bed if heartburn interferes with your sleep and learn stress management techniques because stress can aggravate symptoms of heartburn.
