What are the long-term effects of consuming baking soda?

Someone I know takes baking soda to relieve heartburn. He takes it by taling a spoonful of bakins soda and mixing it with water, then drinking it. Hes been using it for near 20 years, frequently. I am worried that it might be bad for him, because I have never heard of anyone else taking baking soda for heartburn. What are the long-term effects of it? Is it a serious health risk?

Not sure about health problems, but I’m sure all the sodium isn’t great for him.
