My child’s pediatric gastroenterologist calls me and says “your child has abnormal celia, what does that mean?

He gave no explanations, just said that I need to make an appointment. My son constantly has a stomach ache and complains a lot of his stomach so they ran stool, urine, and blood test and the test came back with abnormal celia or cilia results (sp?) what does it mean?

One possibility is he was referring to ‘cilia’, which are the tiny hair-like cells in the respiratory tract that help filter air and work mucus up and out of the lungs. Kids with Cystic Fibrosis have problems with their cilia and are unable to clear their lungs, eventually leading to prolonged and recurrent infections and death by age 35-40. CF patients also have problems with their pancreas (which helps digest food) resulting in stomach pain, diarrhea, and malnutrition. A test looking for an abnormal amount of chloride ions in the sweat is the first step in diagnosis, so if they didn’t do a sweat test this is probably not what he’s talking about.

The other (and more likely) possibility is he was referring to Celiac Disease, which is when the intestines are allergic to a wheat-based ingredient in many foods called gluten. The intestines in essence withdraw from the foods containing gluten and don’t absorb the nutrients, which is painful and also causes diarrhea, malnutrition, vitamin deficiencies, and potentially cancer. The cure is simply eating a gluten-free diet, and patients live an otherwise normal life.

There are other, more rare possibilities but without further information these are the main two that come to mind. Make the appointment and, in the meantime, read up on these diseases so you won’t be quite so overwhelmed with information at the visit.
