Heartburn is caused by stomach acid to travel into the esophagus and irritate the mucosa. As you know the pH is on a scale of 1 to 14. 1 = more acidic 7 = 14 = more neutral or basic alkaline Bacically as close a number is one, the more acidic it will be. Therefore, something with a pH of 2 will give you heartburn over something with a pH of 5.
