The Difficulty of Dealing With Baby Heartburn

Heartburn is hard enough to deal with sometimes in adults let alone dealing with it in a baby. The problem is that baby heartburn is actually quite a common condition.Acid reflux and heartburn in babies is not unusual because babies are so small and have such tiny stomachs. Their stomachs are very sensitive and it is easy for their digestive tract to slow down causing heartburn as a result.

Parents need to remember that it can be hard to even learn that the baby has heartburn in the first place. In most cases the symptoms are quite similar to that of what an adult would experience. Regurgitation and a burning sensation in the chest are the two most commonly experienced symptoms. Of course it can often be hard to tell what is wrong with the baby because at this age they are not able to talk and explain what it is that is bothering them.

The most obvious sign that a parent will notice if their baby has heartburn is that the baby will show discomfort and probably cry a lot as well. A doctor will typically be able to tell what is wrong quite quickly. Doctors know how common heartburn and acid reflux are in children especially babies and so this will most likely be one of the first conditions that they suspect right off the bat. Baby heartburn is usually very easy to treat but of course the regular treatments that adults with heartburn rely on cannot be used on babies.

The doctor will make a diagnosis and will then begin offering ideas to the parent of what they can do to help. It is important to always be safe when treating baby heartburn but fortunately there are a few treatments that are not only effective but gentle on baby’s stomach as well. The most major thing that a doctor will tell any parent to do is make some lifestyle changes for their little one.Even doing the very simple things like changing when the baby is fed and how much they are fed can make the biggest difference in their condition.

They should also try to keep the child’s head elevated when they are going to sleep at night. Cow’s milk can also cause heartburn in babies especially if they are allergic or lactose intolerant. Making sure to not smoke around baby is also important in general but particularly if they have heartburn. Parents should make sure that they are working to find a treatment so that their baby will not have to deal with heartburn.
